The momoirs written by a violinist from Birkenau will be released in English this year.
Helena Dunicz Niwinska was born in Vienna in 1915 but her home town was Lvov. She obtained her higher education as a teacher and a violinist in Lvov before the WWII.
She was arrested with her mother in January 1943 and sent to Auschwitz in the same year. She played the violin in the women's camp orchestra in Birkenau until January 1945 when she was evacuated to other concentration camps: Ravensbrück and Neustadt-Glewe.
She came back to Cracow, then she worked in the Polish Music Association.
Her book tells a moving story about her family as well as it describes tragic months spent in the camps.
