Marek Poloncarz. Prisoners from the Chech Lands in the Auschwitz-Birkenau Concentration Camp
Auschwitz grew to be a place of suffering and death also for many inhabitants of the Czech lands. In addition to the chief victims of the Holocaust — Czech Jewry deported to Auschwitz from the Terezin Ghetto, and the victims of the Roma genocide from the camps at Ledy nad Hodonin, thousands of other people from the Czech lands were also sent to Auschwitz on varoius grounds. Most of the them perished in the camp, others disappeared without a trace, many returned home with their health sapped.
This study sets itself the task to commemorate the victims, recall their fate and finally recollect their names. Even though we do not — and probably never will — know all the names, we do realize that each name hides a tragic story, a unique fate which can hardly be just mechanically added to the hundreds and thousands of their destinies. After all, each name belonged to a human being who lived, loved, associated with other people and whose misfortune was the misfortune of his or her family, close relatives and friends. And that is why each and every name should be recalled.
An introduction and a memorial book of Czech citizens sent to Auschwitz make up the album:
