Extraordinary People from Oświęcim. The Rescue of Auschwitz Prisoners

The extraordinary people from Oświęcim who are the subject of this publication came from the city and the surrounding area. During the Second World War, while themselves suffering prosecution, ethnic cleansing, and the constant threat of imprisonment, they used every means at their disposal to acquire food and medicines for the prisoners in the Nazi German Auschwitz camp. They risked their lives to deliver these supplies, pass on clandestine correspondence, and organize escapes. The Germans arrested many of them for these deeds, and many of them died. After the war, little was said about their heroism. For years, they were almost forgotten.

In 2005, the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum published "People of Good Will: A Memorial Book of the Residents of the Land of Oświęcim Who Aided Auschwitz Prisoners", edited by Dr. Henryk Świebocki. The book was conceived as a tribute to these forgotten heroes. Little has so far been written about these people.

One result of this is the repeated appearance, mainly in the foreign press, of unjust accusations of passivity, indifference, or even hostility towards Auschwitz prisoners on the part of Poles.
